Vancouver Island is located along the west coast of Canada in the province of British Columbia. Well known for its stunning Pacific Ocean scenery and diverse ecosystem, ‘the island’, as it’s reffered to by British Columbians offers a plethora of excellent outdoor experiences. From charming oceanfront villages to the bustling capital city, here are the top ten places to explore on this beautiful Vancouver Island.

1. Victoria

Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, and offers an excellent mixture of history and outdoor adventure. One can explore the famous Butchart Gardens, a 120 year old garden park which is a National Heritage Site. Another must-visit spot in Victoria is the Royal BC Museum and the historic Inner Harbour, where you can take a waterfront stroll along the sea with a plethora of restaurants and shops to enjoy as well as the historical Parliament Buildings.

2. Tofino

Situated on the western coast of the island, is world-famous Tofino. Known for its picturesque coastline and massive stretches of beach, Tofino is Ideal for surfing, storm watching, and hiking around Pacific Rim National Park. Tofino is a literal paradise for the outdoorsy types and one can join a whale-watching tour or go deep sea fishing as well.

3. Nanaimo

Nanaimo is perhaps best known for its picture-perfect harbour and arts scene. One must not miss a chance to stroll along the gorgeous Nanaimo Harbourfront Walkway. Nanaimo is also an excellent jump off point for adventures to other islands. You can choose to visit Newcastle Island, Galiano Island, Gabriola Island and many more all from the ferry terminal. Once on the islands you can kayak, hike, or simply relax on the beach. Lastly don’t forget to try Nanaimo bars while you’re there, as they are very delicious.

4. Cowichan Valley

The Cowichan Valley is Vancouver Island’s very own wine country, boasting lovely wineries which serve up excellent varieties of mediterranean wines and local cuisine. You’ll enjoy the Wonderful scenery as you indulge in tastings of the unique award-winning wines. Visit the Duncan Farmers' Market on Saturdays for farm-to-table dining.

5. Cathedral Grove

Cathedral Grove, located with the boundaries of MacMillan Provincial Park, is home to ancient Douglas fir and red maple trees that can reach an incredible height of over 75 meters. The trails are easy and family-friendly allowing visitors to take in the majestic towering giants, a must-see for photography enthusiasts.

6. Comox Valley

Visiting the Comox Valley provides a wide array of activities year-round. In the summer, tourists can take pat in hiking and biking in popular Strathcona Provincial Park. In winter, the area is great for skiing with access to Mount Washington. The valley is also known for its amazing beaches, parks and local markets.

7. Parksville

Parksville is a quaint village on the sea and is well-known for its large sandy beaches and warm tidal pools, like the ones you’ll find at Rathtrevor Provincial Park. Parksville is a very family-friendly destination and is perfect for a road trip getaway or a camping trip. Exploring Parksville Beach during low tide is an exciting experience, especially for kids, as the tide pools reveal a world of interesting marine life. 8. Ucluelet

Ucluelet, is much less busy than its neighbour Tofino and instead offers a more laid-back atmosphere with equally stunning scenery. Discover the Wild Pacific Trail, which features a once in a lifetime experience of trekking along the rugged coastline. Ucluelet is also the perfect home base for an adventure in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

9. Campbell River

Known as the "Salmon Capital of the World," Campbell River is an obvious stop for fisherman. One can try their luck at catching salmon or take a boat tour out for some deep sea fishing. Check out Elk Falls Provincial Park to get up close and personal with some incredible waterfalls and excellent hiking trails.
